Services to Aid Faculty and Staff
Student Advising: The Lionel Cantú GLBTI Resource Center functions as a vital safety net to UCSC students. Faculty refers students to Center staff to assist GLBTI and emerging students with resolving personal issues that negatively impact their academic performance and jeopardize graduation. Center staff provides assessment of and referrals to appropriate campus/off-campus resources.
Academic Internships: In collaboration with faculty from various divisions, the Center Director provides supervision to students holding academic internships in GLBTI related campus or community projects. Internships help students put their theoretical lessons into practice in meaningful ways and are quite popular with UCSC students.
Co-curricular Programming: The Center sponsors a wide range of co-curricular programs, offering multicultural and gender/sexuality based education in an exceptionally supportive and stimulating environment. Many events allow for faculty and student engagement. Faculty members are invited to present their work in various gatherings throughout the academic year.
Circulating Library: 1,400 volumes of GLBTI-themed non-fiction, fiction, and poetry supplement the more academic collection at McHenry Library. Materials may be checked out for 3 week periods. The Center also subscribes to numerous GLBTI magazines and newspapers.
Student Study Center: Faculty refer students to the Center’s cozy lounge and study center, complete with iMac and PC computers. Students receive basic research help from Center staff.
Guest Lecturers: The Center staff members are knowledgeable about a range of GLBTI topics and are frequent lecturers in campus courses. The Director and Program Coordinator have advanced degrees in Psychology and the Arts. Note: guest lectures must be arranged in advance.
GLBTI Contacts: Faculty frequently makes use of the Center staff’s expertise on GLBTI matters. Staff helps faculty make connections with potential lecturers, related community organizations, relevant course materials, and web-based research sources.
Coming Out/Transitioning on the Job: Center staff works with the Equal Employment Opportunity office to facilitate faculty coming out or transitioning in their work settings.
Meeting Place for Class Sections: The Lionel Cantú GLBTI Resource Center is a popular location for class sections that meet in the mornings only. The semi-private lounge can accommodate ~15 students. Arrangements should be made in advance.
Faculty Mixers: The Center coordinates quarterly mixers for GLBTI faculty, staff, and friends to facilitate professional and social networking opportunities.
Faculty Listserv: The Center manages a listserv for GLBTI faculty. This low volume list informs faculty of upcoming campus/community events of interest. Please contact listserv manager q-admin(AT)ucsc.edu.
