Cantu’s QTBIPOC Orientation
The Cantú Queer Center invites all incoming, transfer, and returning students (undergraduate and graduate) to join us for our annual QTBIPOC Orientation, a welcome event that connects students to community, resources, and celebration of their intersectional identities. Through community-led teach-ins, racial and ethnic affinity spaces, and powerful conversations, we offer this space to deepen your sense of community at UCSC while learning about the resources available to you. QTBIPOC Orientation continues throughout the year through events such as QTBIPOC Monthly Hangouts, African-Black-Carribean (ABC) Queer Mixers, and similar events to continue building community and uplifting QTBIPOC experiences.

- Asian Pacific Islander Queer Women and Transgender Community: APIQWTC provides opportunities for Asian & Pacific Islander queer women and transgender people to socialize, network, build community, engage in inter-generational organizing, and increase community visibility.
- Asian/Pacific Gays and Friends: A/PGF is a non-profit, social, and educational group established for gay Asians and friends who share an interest in Asian cultures and experiences. A/PGF’s primary purpose is to provide a supportive environment where the interaction between members is enjoyable, safe, and enriching.
- National Queer Asian and Pacific Islander: The National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance is a federation of LGBTQ Asian American, South Asian, Southeast Asian, and Pacific Islander organizations. NQAPIA seeks to build the capacity of local LGBT AA/PI organizations, invigorate grassroots organizing, develop leadership, and challenge homophobia, racism, and anti-immigrant bias.
- Muslims for Progressive Values: “As Muslims for Progressive Values, we inculcate a culture rooted in human rights through public education, advocacy, and the arts. MPV is a progressive Muslim voice on contemporary issues. We voice our perspectives with policy briefs, by participating in civil discourse.”
- SWANA Alliance: “SWANA Alliance is a U.S.-based national organization fighting for the liberation of South West Asian and North African peoples.”

Regional and national resources
- Santa Cruz Black: Established in response to the murder of George Floyd on May 25, 2020, this initiative was born out of a need to bring Black voices and concerns to the forefront in Santa Cruz County, where Black residents make up just 1.7% of the population. The organization is dedicated to advancing Black initiatives through community engagement, with a focus on closing the racial wealth gap, expanding affordable housing opportunities, empowering youth, and creating spaces for connection and celebration among Black residents in the county.
- Rise Together Santa Cruz County: Rise Together is a coalition of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color leaders, in partnership with the Community Foundation Santa Cruz County, working together to advance racial equity across our community.
- Black Stripe: The Black Stripe represents the cooperative effort of Same Gender Loving (SGL) “Queers”: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Trans people of African Descent. It was inspired by discussions on GLBPOC and Sistahnet.
- The Brown Boi Project: Located in Oakland, California, The Brown Boi Project is a community of masculine of center womyn, men, two-spirit people, transmen, and our allies committed to changing the way that communities of color talk about gender.
- National Black Justice Coalition: The National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) is a civil rights organization dedicated to empowering Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. NBJC’s mission is to end racism and homophobia.
- Zuna Institute: Zuna Institute is a National Advocacy Organization for Black Lesbians that was created to address the needs of black lesbians in the areas of Health, Public Policy, Economic Development, and Education.
- NAACP Santa Cruz County Branch: The mission of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is to secure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights in order to eliminate race-based discrimination and ensure the health and well-being of all persons.
- ABC/African-American Community Health Project: A partner proejct offered through Walnut Avenue Family & Women’s Center, the ABC mission is to empower African-Americans to be active and informed health consumers and survivors through self-help activities and health education. The program aspires to create a dialogue with the community at large about racial disparities in health and the need for cultural and racial sensitivity.
- Pride in the Pews: Pride in the Pews mobilizes Black-serving anchor institutions to advocate for the holistic health and wellness of Black LGBTQ+ communities.

- Pajaro Valley Pride: ”Pajaro Valley Pride was formed in 2015 by a group of locals who saw a need for LGBTQIA2S+ visibility in Watsonville and the surrounding Pajaro Valley. From the beginning, it was about more than just celebrating pride once a year; it was about creating community.”
- Latino USA: This link is a podcast of queer Latinx stories – from Anthony Romero, the first gay director of the ACLU, to the practice of “pumping,” or black market silicone injections, in the trans community. We hear two stories about growing up and transitioning genders. We learn about the plight of LGBTQ detained immigrants. We hear from a gay man who ran for class president at UNC.
- Movimiento de Integración y Liberación Homosexual (MOVILH)
- UnidosUS: UnidosUS, previously known as NCLR (National Council of La Raza) is the nation’s largest Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization. Through our unique combination of expert research, advocacy programs, and an Affiliate Network of nearly 300 community-based organizations across the United States and Puerto Rico, UnidosUS simultaneously challenges the social, economic, and political barriers that affect Latinos at the national and local levels.
- Familia es Familia: “Familia es Familia is a first-of-its kind, comprehensive public education campaign aimed at creating strong allies with Hispanic communities across the country.”
- Latino Equality Alliance: “LEA focuses on building power within the Latinx LGBTQ+ community and advocating for systemic changes that promote healthy and safe environments in schools, homes and neighborhoods for LGBTQ+ youth and families. We ground our work through public education, organized actions, coaliton building and leadership development.”
- Soulforce’s Teologia Sin Verguenza: “Loosely translated as ‘Shameless Theology’, Teología Sin Vergüenza is a Spanish language digital media project by and for queer Latinx people, developed in response to the Religious Right’s stronghold on Spanish-language religious media across the United States and Latin America.”
